Letter from the director of education to families: Dr. George Hall Public School, Jack Callaghan Public School, and Mariposa Elementary School boundary review – June 26

Dear parents/guardians,

I am writing to share an important update about the school catchment boundary review that was recently conducted for Dr. George Hall Public School, Jack Callaghan Public School, and Mariposa Elementary School (MES).

At the June 13, Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) Regular Meeting of the Board, two proposed options were presented to the Board of Trustees, with an additional modification to the first option. Trustees approved the recommendation to move forward with the modified option one boundary change for these three schools. The modification includes both the north and south sides of Salem Road to become MES’s catchment boundary. The new catchment boundaries for these three schools will take effect September 2024.

School administrators have begun developing a transition plan for the students who will be changing home schools, which includes support from mental health counsellors, and a school visit day at their new school.

TLDSB has made two decisions to legacy students:

  1. Students entering Grade 7 this September (2023) will be permitted to stay at their current school for the final two years of their elementary school journey.
  2. Incoming Junior and Senior Kindergarten students may enroll at their future home school for this September (2023). If this option applies to you and this is your preference for the 2023-2024 school year, please contact your school administrator to initiate the process.

It is important to note that this boundary change will shift some students into becoming walkers if they are within the walk distance of 1.6km or less of their home school. Transportation will continue to be provided to and from school for eligible students who reside outside the designated walking zone for their home school. After August 25, families can check mybustoschool.ca for your child’s transportation arrangements.

Effective September 2024, students will be required to attend their new home school, unless one of the legacy decisions noted above applies. Special circumstances will be considered jointly by the school’s administration and superintendent of learning.

All information, including previous communications, can be found on the Boundary Review page on the Board’s website.

If you have further questions, contact your child’s school directly.

Sincerely,

Wes Hahn
