TLDSB students take part in the Support Youth Ontario’s Tools in the Trades Boot Camp

Support Ontario Youth (SOY) recently visited secondary schools across Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) to host the Tools in the Trades Boot Camps, giving students hands-on experience in various trade sectors.

The one-day camp was open to current Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) students who were divided into two groups. The first station had students taking part in hands-on activities, exploring the practical aspects of the specific sector. The second station featured a motivational talk designed to inspire and equip students for successful careers in the trades.

On November 1, Fenelon Falls Secondary School hosted the automotive service boot camp. Students had the opportunity to perform basic maintenance on various mechanical systems, such as dirt bikes and engines, with guidance from professionals in the automotive service industry.

On November 2, Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School hosted the electrical boot camp. Students concentrated on wiring electrical circuits.

All students who took part in the camps received a free tool kit, valued at $150!

“SOY’s Tools in the Trades events were an exceptional opportunity for high school students to explore the world of skilled trades,” said TLDSB Dual Credit counsellor, Ben Gerroir. “With a combination of hands-on experiences, motivational talks, and networking opportunities, this event showcased the importance of practical knowledge and valuable connections in the path to a successful career in the trades.”
