TLDSB student wins Special Olympics event

Learn@Home Secondary School Student Austin Anderson has always had a love for sports, playing basketball, soccer (including with the Woodville soccer league), and even competing in a Special Olympics triathlon!

Austin was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child, but has never let his physical challenges stop him. With the assistance of TLDSB Learn@Home Practical Academic and Life Skills Teacher Maria Washburn, Austin signed up for the first-ever virtual Special Olympics event. Held on February 18, Austin competed in the soccer event.

At the suggestion of Special Olympics Ontario, Austin’s grandfather Brian created a device to help him ‘kick’ the ball. Austin was excited to be able to use it independently. With the device, he was able to hit his goal on all five attempts, winning his division against Special Olympics athletes from across the province.

“Special Olympics Ontario is a fantastic organization that regularly puts on events, which light up our year,” said Washburn. “I am excited to have students remain connected during the pandemic.”

Congratulations, Austin, we’re so proud of you!
