Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) hosted the Secondary Film Festival on June 8, held virtually in media arts and communications technology classrooms across the Board.
Highlighting student talent in categories such as animation, comedy, drama, and non-fiction, the showcase featured eight short films chosen from the school-wide competitions. This event provided students with practical experience in cinematography, directing, scriptwriting, and editing as they collaborated to realize their creative visions.
The success of these projects was supported by teachers who mentored the students, providing technical guidance and constructive critiques throughout the filmmaking process.
TLDSB consultant, Ian McTavish, expressed gratitude to the teachers and students for their creativity and hard work, “One of our judges works in the film industry and he expressed how impressed he was with the films overall. The students and teachers involved did a fantastic job telling their stories and showcasing their skills.”
The following schools were recognized as winners in their respective categories by the panel of judges:
- Animation: Virtual Learning Centre, Even from far away
- Comedy: Haliburton Highlands Secondary School, Grand Slam
- Drama: I.E. Weldon Secondary School, Given to Fly
- Non-fection: I.E. Weldon Secondary School, Chronic Disease
“Thank you for choosing my film out of all the amazing films in the festival, I am truly honoured,” said Haliburton Highlands Secondary student, Vanessa Beynon. “I hope this movie inspires others to achieve their goals, as it took me years of practice to get to this stage today. As said in my film, ‘Don’t give up, believe in yourself. Let’s go Blue Jays! Hit a grand slam!’”
The People’s Choice awards votes will end on June 15 and the winners will be announced then.
