Monck Public School (MPS) recently launched a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) club as a way to create a welcoming and accepting school environment for all students within the school.
The club is student-led and organized, and has members from students in Grades 2 to 8. Since the beginning of the school year, members meet once a week and recently have been working together to create a bulletin board that is eye-catching and positive. The board highlights quotes about kindness, inclusivity, and celebrating diversity. For the month of February, the club agreed on the theme of kindness.
“We wanted to inspire people to treat one another with kindness and acceptance,” said MPS teacher, Tracy Martin. “Mahatma Gandhi said that if we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change.”
The GSA club has plans to add 2SLGBTQIA+ books to the school’s library and to create a mural on the school property within the 2022-2023 school year.
