LINDSAY, ON – After a successful first year of the Director’s Student Voice Summits in 2023, Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) director of education, Wes Hahn, hosted two summits this April to hear directly from students.
Over the two sessions, which took place on April 25 at the TLDSB Muskoka Education Centre and April 30 at I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS), 85 students from Grades 7-10 were invited to share how learning in schools could be more effective for current and future students. The students’ thoughts, comments, and opinions were heard by Hahn and shared with the senior team.
“Student voice means everything to me,” says Blake, a Grade 11 student from IEWSS. “As a G7 Student Senate representative, I have to take student voice to the school board, so sharing the ideas of my fellow students is really important.”
Led by the secondary curriculum team with help from the G7 Student Senate, the student attendees were engaged in many activities throughout the day with one of them having students provide ideas to questions, such as:
- How can we best prepare students for a successful future?
- How can we improve student well-being?
- How can we improve student attendance?
“Collecting authentic student voice is not only important to me in my role, but it is also one of the goals of the TLDSB 2022-2027 Strategic Plan,” commented Hahn. “Ensuring we make improvements in our system that reflect the student voice is extremely important as we move forward and I am truly thankful to all of the students for participating in these summits.”
All participants provided open, honest feedback for our system to take into consideration and made new connections with students from other schools along the way.
