Local students supporting students in India

This year’s mission for the Interact Club at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School (HHSS) is “Service Above Self.”

The club takes part in an international campaign each year and created a Puzzle Fundraiser for the 2021-2022 school year, with all proceeds going to support the Mahatma Gandhi Sishu Siksha Sadan school in northern India. Each puzzle costs $35 with two designs to select from, a photo of a nearby Haliburton lake, titled Morning Reflections, and a mural of the school, titled With Love, Hal High.

The club originated as part of the school’s student council, eventually breaking away to become a formal independent group, supporting local, international, and national initiatives. The partnership with Mahatma Gandhi Sishu Siksha Sadan school first developed through the Haliburton Rotary Club, who have an established relationship with the Mahatma Gandhi Sishu Siksha Sadan school. The HHSS Interact Club also supported the school, in 2021, by releasing a cookbook titled, From the Heart of Haliburton cookbook, which raised $3,500.

Other projects supported by the club’s international campaign include, a WE Scare Hunger campaign collecting goods for the local food bank, a shoebox gift campaign during the holidays to provide gifts to uderprivilled teens, as well as recently hosting a week-long fundraiser to send aid for Ukrainian people, raising $3,000!
