Huntsville Public School students create equity buttons

Since the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, the Huntsville Public School (HPS) Equity For All group has been working towards making the school a more inclusive place for all students.

One initiative that particularly stood out for the group was the creation of equity buttons as a way to promote awareness about gender and identity. The idea is that every student in the school will have the opportunity to create and wear a button by choosing a flag they want represented in the background and the text to display on top of the flag, such as an individual’s pronouns.

The Equity For All group meets regularly to discuss ways to make the school more inclusive for all.

“The takeaway from this initiative is that we all deserve to feel safe at school, and that we can do small things to make everyone feel welcome,” said Grade 8 French teacher, Katrina Cotterchio. “By seeing these pins, students will know that they have allies in the students and staff in our building.”

A special shout out to the Huntsville Public Library librarian who has been instrumental in the project by lending the school the use of their button maker!
