History is made by IEWSS Varsity Hockey Team

The I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS) Varsity Hockey Team recently made school history by winning their first championship!

The varsity team has been around since the school was inaugurated in 1971 and is made up of Grade 9 to 12 male students. Although they have seen many great players over the 50 years and competed to the best of their ability, the team has never been able to win a championship tournament…until now!

On March 4, the team competed and won three to two in the Central Ontario Secondary Schools Association (COSSA) semi-final game against East Northumberland Secondary School. This win advanced the team to the championship game, where they then defeated the St. Peters Saints five to two, placing first overall in the tournament.

“I think the win, the championship, and our appearance in OFSAA feels validating. This community produces excellent hockey players spread out over multiple organizations. When the best of those players are put on the same team, playing for their school, great things can happen,” said IEWSS Varsity Hockey head coach, Dave Chambers. “In that sense, the championship validates the tremendous talent this area has always possessed. The Kawartha Lakes can compete with and beat teams from larger areas like Peterborough.”

The team will now advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament, which is taking place on March 19 to 21 in Whitby.
