Swearing in of new student trustee
Maiya Dyni, a Grade 11 student from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School, was sworn in by Chair of the Board, Bruce Reain, and Director of Education, Wes Hahn, to be a student trustee for Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) for the next two school years. Dyni signed a declaration of her intent to carry out the duties of a trustee, and joins Logan MacInnis as a second student trustee for the Board.
Summer learning
Superintendent of learning, Jay MacJanet, presented an overview of the elementary summer learning program that took place this past July. The program saw 175 student attendees from Grades 1 to 4 at eight locations across the board. The program offered a focus on literacy and mathematics, and targeted instruction was delivered based on student need.
Acting associate superintendent of learning, Tanya Fraser, provided an overview of summer learning at the secondary level. There were 76 students enrolled in courses, 19 students entering Grade 9 took part in the learning strategies course that focused on developing skills and self-confidence in numeracy and learning strategies, and the co-op summer program saw 240 students who gained valuable experience in various sectors and trades. Fraser noted that the employers of our co-op students expressed praise and commended the student’s on their work ethic.
Director’s Report on the Strategic Plan
In his report, director of education Wes Hahn noted how important summer learning is across all ages as it provides a direct impact on student success. Hahn also shared that many staff all across TLDSB are continuing their professional learning, most recently in the areas of advanced qualifications courses and sessions for professional development on a variety of topics taking place before school start-up. In regard to the Director’s Summits held last spring, Hahn shared that the information gained through the staff and student voice was invaluable and will be implemented into our school improvement plans.
