Logan MacInnis, a Grade 11 student from Fenelon Falls Secondary School, was sworn in by Chair of the Board, Bruce Reain, and Director of Education, Wes Hahn, to be a student trustee for Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) for the next two school years. MacInnis signed a declaration of his intent to carry out the duties of a trustee, and joins Alexis Evans-Turnbull as a second student trustee for the Board. This is Evans-Turnbull’s second and final year as student trustee.
Superintendent of Learning, Paul Goldring, introduced the plan for an outdoor education review committee. This committee will have the responsibility of reviewing the Board’s outdoor education programming and its locations, which will include the Yearley Outdoor Education Centre. The committee will also develop a long-term strategy for outdoor education for TLDSB students. As a short-term strategy, Grade 6 students will attend Camp Muskoka during the 2022-2023 school year to ensure our students continue to receive outdoor education opportunities during the duration of the review.
TLDSB is committed to continuing to offer outdoor education experiences for students. An update with recommendations will be provided after the outdoor education review committee has evaluated options for outdoor education in TLDSB.
The Feed All Four Fund is a fund that is supported by TLDSB staff and by our community to support TLDSB families in need. To date, 168 requests for support have been received from schools, and over $70,000 has been distributed to families. The majority of requests are for essentials needs, including groceries, clothing, and hearing aids and/or glasses for students.
Director of Education, Wes Hahn, shared touching notes from recipients about how this fund has impacted their lives. TLDSB has grown the fund through donations and a staff-wide fundraising event.
Director of Education, Wes Hahn, addressed how the system is preparing for the new school year, including planning and preparation meetings that have occurred this week. Acknowledging that COVID-19 still exists, Hahn noted that we are all hopeful that we’ll continue through the school year in an as normal a way as possible.
Hahn shared that under provincial guidance, along with that of our medical officer of health, we will be operating under the same COVID-19 measures that we did this past June. Masks are not mandatory but may be worn as a personal choice, reinforcing hygiene best practices and self screening each day prior to attending school and/or workplaces using the provincial screening tool. Moreover, enhanced cleaning will continue to be in place this year.
Board meetings are open to the public to attend the host location in person. For virtual access, the meetings are live-streamed and the link is made available on the tldsb.ca website on the day of the meeting.
