Fenelon Falls Secondary School hosts Reach for The Top event

On June 13, Fenelon Falls Secondary School (FFSS) hosted a group of Grade 8 students from each of the six feeder schools for an introduction to the inter-school quiz program, Reach for The Top.

Schoolreach is a trivia competition for Canadian secondary schools. Reach teams build their skills within their high school club using game packs and compete at competitions against other school teams in their area. The FFSS team recently travelled to Toronto on April 28 to represent the Peterborough/Kawartha region at the Provincial Championships. The team placed 20th in the province and saw this as an opportunity to encourage others to join when they entered FFSS.

“We really wanted them to feel welcome when they came next year and to see how fun Reach can be,” said FFSS Grade 11 student, Chayse Armstrong.

Students from Bobcaygeon Public School, Fenelon Township Public School, Lady Mackenzie Public School, Langton Public School, Ridgewood Public School, and Woodville Elementary School were all present throughout the day. Game packs are typically designed for high school students, so the FFSS team researched and wrote packs specifically for the Grade 8s with a wide array of categories from Sponge Bob to Norse Mythology. The FFSS students also hosted the matches and built bonds with the incoming students.

“It’s great to see our current team make connections with future Falcons,” said FFSS coach, Roger Johnson. “A lot of these students aren’t involved in other extracurricular activities, so it’s important for them to know they have a place here.”
