Langton Public School students learn about the Board’s Land Acknowledgment

On October 27, the Trillium Lakelands District School Board Indigenous Education Student Success Team (IESST) visited Langton Public School (LPS) to share teachings about the Board’s Land Acknowledgement.

One of the classes visited throughout the day was the school’s Practical Academic and Life Skills (PA&LS) class that supports students in Grades 5 to 8. Throughout the teaching, IESST members Tricia Holmes and Sherry Telford shared what the acknowledgement meant and how it relates to the land we live on through role play, video, and class discussion. Each student then had the opportunity to create their own personal land acknowledgement that included giving thanks to the land, First Nations Peoples, and ways each individual could personally give back.

“By creating these individual acknowledgements, the students were able to show a better connection to the message and the importance of acknowledging our past and moving forward as a country,” said LPS PA&LS teacher, Julie Cook. “We proudly displayed these personal land acknowledgements on our classroom bulletin board.”

The IESST was launched in September 2022 to, not only to support the goals of the Board’s Strategic Plan, but to improve student achievement and well-being for Indigneous students in TLDSB, as well as to support educators to create learning environments and experiences that foster equity, inclusion, and belonging.
