LCVI student production: Little Shop of Horrors

In April, Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI) students put on the production of Little Shop of Horrors, which was the first production since 2006 at the school. Eleven LCVI students attended the Board Meeting and performed two musical numbers from the show for attendees.

Recognition of Skills Canada gold medal recipient

I.E. Weldon Secondary School student, Caleb Dyck, recently competed at the National Skills Ontario Competitions in the individual carpentry competition and was the gold medal winner. Dyck was recognized by trustees and the director of education for representing Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) as part of Team Ontario, alongside Huntsville High School student, Wil Sinclair, who competed in the electrical installations competition and finished in fourth place.

G7 Student Senate 2023-2024 overview

Student trustee, Logan MacInnis, provided an update to trustees on G7 Student Senate initiatives that took place both Board-wide and at the school level this past school year. Initiatives that stood out included a High School Film Festival and a Mental Health Campaign that focused on helping students understand and support their own mental health.

MacInnis officially welcomed Fenelon Falls Secondary School student, Taliah McNelly, who will be replacing MacInnis as student trustee for a two-year term starting in September, as he graduates this month.

Director’s recognition

Outgoing student trustee, MacInnis, was recognized for his extraordinary dedication and efforts in the role over the last two years. MacInnis has been a passionate advocate for mental health and wellness, and for representing the voice of his peers. MacInnis is a keen learner, taking interest in governance and process at the Board table, and engaging in professional development and learning with his student trustee colleagues from other Ontario school boards at every opportunity. In addition, he has been an outstanding leader at the G7 Student Senate meetings and an active participant in The Ontario Student Trustee Association (OSTA-AECO).

Director’s recognition for innovation and leadership

The Director’s Recognition for Innovation and Leadership Award celebrates individuals in TLDSB who have combined the characteristics of innovation and leadership to improve our system and advance the strategic direction goals of improving student learning and achievement, and fostering student and staff well-being. The award is presented by the director of education, Wes Hahn, at each TLDSB Public Meeting of the Board. Hahn introduced this month’s recipient:

Superintendent of learning, Paul Goldring, has been in the education field since the 1990s, working in another board before moving to TLDSB in 1997. Goldring has been an educator, a vice-principal, principal, and most recently, a superintendent of learning. He was an administrator at seven schools across the Muskoka region, making a positive impact at each location.

In addition to his unwavering support for student achievement, Goldring has demonstrated a knack for developing strong school culture and climate, making sure the buildings that he is leading are welcoming spaces where every student and adult feel they belong. As a superintendent of learning for the past five years, Goldring’s impact has been felt system-wide through his leadership in the Technology Services Department and safe schools portfolio.

Finance and Administration Committee Report

Trustee Tim McAlpine brought information from the Finance and Administration Committee meeting that the draft budget in the amount of $264.8M was passed at the committee with a recommendation that the draft budget be advanced to the Board of Trustees for ratification. Trustees unanimously passed the motion to ratify the budget.

Superintendent of Business Services, Tim Ellis, shared a funding overview with trustees and recent changes that have been made from the Ministry of Education. These funding changes included a grouping of three sections and six funds.

Board meetings are open to the public to attend at the host location in-person. For viewing, the meetings are live-streamed and the link is made available on the tldsb.ca website on the day of the meeting.
