Community fundraiser for the nutrition programs at Cardiff Elementary School and Wilberforce Elementary School

The third-annual Benoir Lake Fundraising Snowmobile Radar Run, otherwise known as “Speed Fest,” took place on February 15 was a huge win for two local elementary schools; Cardiff Elementary School (CES) and Wilberforce Elementary School (WES).

This winter tradition draws snowmobile enthusiasts from across Ontario to the small town for the Radar Run. During the day-long event, participants pay to compete individually on an ice track, racing in various class levels to achieve top speeds for prizes and recognition.

The event offered more than just racing, as attendees enjoyed a barbecue, raffles, and various winter-themed games and activities. A staggering $8,331 was raised at this year’s event and will directly support the nutrition programs at CES and WES, which provides hot breakfast and/or lunches to students.

Sandy Macdonald, the school secretary, noted that the fundraiser has helped the school in so many ways over the past three years, “some of our families struggle with food insecurities, so the donation from this event helps us to take that stress away from them and provide nutrition-dense food daily to students, which has improved our attendance.”
