How to create secure passwords

One of the best ways to increase your digital safety is to follow best practices for creating secure passwords. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • A password should be 16 characters or more in length and have at least four random words.
  • A password should include a combination of letters, numbers, and characters.
  • A password shouldn’t be used with any other account.
  • A password shouldn’t include any of the user’s personal information like their address or phone number. It is also best not to include any information that may be available on social media, like kids’ or pets’ names.
  • A password shouldn’t contain any consecutive letters or numbers.
  • A password shouldn’t be the word “password” or the same letter or number repeated.

Mind over mood

As a parent or guardian, we are aware of the stressors our children face today, and we often hear that our children are anxious or depressed. Usually what that means is that they feel nervous, restless, tense, sad, and/or down. Mind over mood means that what we think helps frame what we feel. Sometimes what our children think and feel can be overwhelming and can interfere with their ability to learn. Talk to your school principal or teacher to help identify resources within the school system.

Build your child’s mental health

Feelings of stress can have an effect on the way your child feels and acts, and can make learning more challenging. Here are some tips to help your child during times of change and uncertainty:

  • Help them build strong relationships. Having at least one person they can talk to and trust will help in times of need.
  • Listen and communicate. Mealtimes are often a good time for talking. Ask questions about your child’s day and give them time to respond.
  • Provide time and support your children to be active every day. This can be structured activities and sports or can be time to play together and with others.
  • Make it easy to eat healthier. Buy mostly healthy food choices and offer at meals and snacks. Make water the drink of choice. Limit sugary drinks and foods high in sugar, sodium, and/or fat.
  • Help your children get enough sleep. Follow a regular schedule, shut off screens well before bedtime, and encourage calm activities right before bed.
