Letter from the Director of Education – Student Census 2022

Website bannerTrillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) is committed to understanding and meeting the learning needs of all students. We believe that all members of the school community deserve to work and learn in a safe and caring learning environment. Equity, achievement, and well-being are interconnected and the Board believes that all students can achieve their own personal success when barriers to equity and inclusion are removed.

As the communities we serve grow more diverse, we welcome and value the experiences and perspectives of each person and the richness this diversity brings. As part of our commitment to continued progress towards equity and inclusion for all, the Board is undertaking a voluntary Student Census starting on January 17, 2022, to collect identity-based demographic information. The data collected from students and parents/guardians will provide the school system with valuable information that will help to improve strategic planning, programming, and services with a focus on student achievement and engagement. Once fully compiled, this data will be shared with our families to help our communities better understand our population.

The Student Census is confidential and voluntary, but not anonymous. Individual responses, and all personal student and family information will remain strictly confidential protected under the freedom of information and protection of privacy legislation. Census questions are grade-level appropriate, consistent with The Ontario Curriculum, Health and Physical Education (2019)

For students in Kindergarten to Grade 8, the Census is to be completed by parents/guardians online or on paper (available upon request). Secondary students will have the opportunity to complete the Census in class. As this is a voluntary Census, parents/guardians can choose to opt their child out of participation.

You can learn more about the Census by visiting the Student Census page on the Board’s website. If you have further questions or would like additional information, please contact the TLDSB Equity Task Force at [email protected].

Thank you for continuing to help us be better together.
